  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, coarsely crushed

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)

  • 10-12 cashew nuts

  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)

  • Salt to taste

  • 4 cups water

  • Fresh curry leaves and coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Wash the rice and moong dal together until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.

    • Coarsely crush the black peppercorns.

  2. Cook the Rice and Dal:

    • In a pressure cooker, add the washed rice and moong dal along with 4 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt.

    • Close the lid and cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles until the rice and dal are soft and mushy.

  3. Prepare the Tempering:

    • In a small pan, heat the ghee over medium heat.

    • Add the cashew nuts and fry until golden brown. Remove and set aside.

    • In the same ghee, add the grated ginger, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, and asafoetida. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.

  4. Combine and Serve:

    • Open the pressure cooker once the pressure has released naturally.
